Installation with analog electronics, photographs and preserving glasses, 2004-2009

‘Elfs’ are small mechanical creatures powered by solar energy. Due to their chaotic output and reaction to changing weather conditions or shadows they appear alive and spirited, they seem to live autarkic when starting at sunrise and stopping at sunset. The immediate compassion for these life forms is an astonishing experience for the observer, even though the abilities of the creatures are very limited.
‘Elf’ is a two-part installation: On the one hand, the ‘elfs’ are documented in their natural habitat, and the fading contrast of electronics and nature gives the scenario a surprising common impression. On the other hand, the imprisonment of these life forms in preserving glasses reminds us of childhood adventures, exploring and discovering the world around us.

The ‘elf’ installation is developed in the context of the research and media art project ‘electronic-life-forms’ by Pascal Glissmann and Martina Höfflin – inspired by the BEAM technology of Mark Tilden and the artistic work “Living particles” by Ralf Schreiber.
